Now that winter has finally arrived in Wisconsin, it has brought with it a deep chill. When the temperatures plummet like this, leaders in area districts have to make decisions on a daily basis of if the weather is safe enough for students and staff to have school.
District Administrator for the Freedom Area School District, Kevin Kilstofte says a wind chill of around 30 degrees below zero would be grounds for cancelling school, but it's a more complex process than just checking the temperature.
During winter time, Kilstofte says he and other school district officials are up long before students. They have to check forecasts and road conditions and make an education decision based on all the resources they have.
When temperatures get low and stay low, this becomes a daily, even hourly process of staying up to date with conditions.
Road conditions and snow accumulation coupled with school buses ability to safely get kids to school all factor in the decision but ultimately each district can make their own call.
