Severe weather, including an EF1 tornado, tore through the Appleton area Wednesday, ripping off roofs and uprooting trees.
On Thursday, the tough work of cleaning up the damage began across the Fox Valley.
The Appleton Department of Public Works has encouraged anyone who has yard debris, such as branches, to bring them to the yard waste sites in the city at 2625 E. Glendale Ave and 701 S. Whitman Ave.
Both facilities will be open from 9 a.m. to 6:45 p.m., Friday through Monday.
Anyone who has damage to trees on the city terrace should contact the Department of Public Works at (920) 832-5580.
As crews continue to clear fallen trees and clean up debris, the city is asking people to avoid climbing trees on the terrace or cutting limbs from those trees.
The Appleton Fire Department reminds property owners to check the batteries in their smoke alarms and not use gas grills inside their homes following Wednesday's storms. Sump-pumps should also be checked to make sure they're still working.
Also, the fire department reminds everyone to run generators outside and not overload extension cords.
If you are using a generator, use caution if it is directly feeding your electrical system, the city said.
Finally, the city of Appleton is asking community members to keep an eye out for suspicious activity in areas with power outages or storm damage.
Also, check on your neighbors who may be ill or elderly. If you have any concerns, call Appleton Police at (920) 832-5500.
