Car wash roof lands on house roof as storms rip through Appleton

It was a terrifying sight for a family driving on Highway 441 through Appleton Wednesday: insulation and metal flying through the air, hanging onto power lines and hitting their windshield.

The debris came from a nearby warehouse that had a wall ripped off during the dangerous storms.

Five or six workers were inside at the time, but none of them were hurt, a company rep said.

Nearby, Tim Boettcher saw the storm coming, and saw someone outside who needed help.

"I yelled for him, 'There's a tornado! Get in my house!" Boettcher explained. "Just as the power went out, we had to pull the emergency release for the garage door, then we went down to the basement."

Nearby Stephanie Meulemans and her family didn't have a basement, just an apartment hallway.

"My boyfriend was home at the time, we took the baby and seeked shelter," Meulemans said.

Down the road in Kimberly, a car wash's roof was torn off and landed on a home right behind the car wash. A person on scene said a woman was inside, but she is OK.

The storm's power was shown off, wrapping a metal roof as if it were tin foil around a home.
