Both sides in an Oshkosh child abuse case asked the judge for more time to work out a possible plea deal Monday in court.

Richard Root, 21, faces one charge of Physical Abuse of a Child - Recklessly Causing Great Bodily Harm for allegedly injuring his two-month-old daughter in March.

Police were called to Aurora Medical Center on March 3 for a bruised and lethargic 2-month-old baby, according to court documents.

The baby was airlifted to children's hospital in Milwaukee, records showed. The child had several broken ribs, a broken leg and arm and brain bleeding.

When questioned by officers, Root admitted to causing the injuries by shaking the baby when changing her diaper, court documents said.

The baby was treated and is with family members.

Root will be back in court August 9. If both sides cannot agree on a plea deal, the case will go to a jury trial.
