This Sunday the Diocese of Green Bay invited members of law enforcement, fire fighters and first responders to a special "Blue Mass" at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay, to take a moment to show appreciation for our men and women in blue.
Bishop Ricken spoke to those who attended, calling them local guardians. He told them, "When you need to make split second decisions know that God is with you, the Holy spirit is with you."
The service was like any other Sunday mass but also offered a special homily and blessing for officers. Bishop Ricken says he prayed for God's protection over our officers, and taught them how to pray for protection as well.
Blue Mass is a Catholic tradition dating back to 1934 in New York City but in the midst of continuing violence across the country, the Bishop says it is a tradition that will go on.
Blue Mass is held once a year, as well as other special masses like "White Mass" for men and women in the healthcare industry.
