Black Friday shopping safety tips

Posted

ASHWAUBENON, Wis.- In just a few days the biggest deals of the year hit the shelves and thousands will camp outside of stores to be the first to get them.

Police are now warning shoppers to use caution and safety while searching for discounts among the crowds of people.

"There's just so many people, it's chaos," said Town of Menasha Police Department officer Jason Weber.

Officers will be adding extra patrols around shopping areas in both Grand Chute and Ashwaubenon.

"With the game being in town, we've been working very closely with Ashwaubenon Public Safety to make sure things run smoothly," said Bay Park Square Mall director of marketing, Stephanie Blavat-Vesely.

Police say there are things shoppers should do too to help cut down on problems.

"People are leaving purses in carts, you know and maybe forgetting another item," said Weber.

Never leave your wallet or purse out of your sight, but do keep the things you buy out of sight.

"Putting those items in the trunk or kind of in the back covered up," said Weber.

Also lock your car doors at all times and be an attentive driver.  Police say accidents are common with people rushing to the next big sale.

"There's just an influx of people to the area shopping, walking and not paying attention," said Weber.

Lastly patience is key.  There's no getting away from the lines so prepare for them and expect to wait.  Also before you head to the stores mall personal say make a plan.  Pick the stores you want to go to first and prioritize, it will make for a much easier time once you're in the crowds.
