Many are beginning to plan for summer travel and making all the arrangements for getting away from the stresses of work. But as you scroll through the best deals online for your getaway are you setting yourself up for a major travel headache? NBC26 shares some of the telltale your dream vacation, isn’t everything you thought it could be.

Before you hop on a plane to a destination that looked perfect online, you have to do your homework.

"There's nothing worse than spending all kinds of money on a vacation and then have it turn into something bad," says Rose Grey of Fox World Travel.

Travel experts say with the slew of online alternatives to hotels like VRBO or even Craigslist, you should know who you're working with.

"Especially if it's a private home, I think you really want to make sure you can actually get a contact of somebody who owns the home," adds Grey. She recommends not just having their phone number, but to have communication with them beyond just booking your stay.

You can use the advice locally too. At the Astor House Bed and Breakfast in Green Bay Barbara Robinson’s business was built on repeat customers.

"What does trust add up to in a business like yours?" "Well it's everything." Barbara says answering questions about local restaurants, or places to take in the sights in, in Green Bay, reassures her new customers she’s truly local.

Travel experts also add that the majority of business will never ask for cash or a money order up front. They're going to want a credit card, they'll also offer you everything in writing.

"What the room price will be what the taxes are, everything," adds Robinson.

You should also check the place you would like to rents online reviews thoroughly, or look them up locally.

"It's good to check locally with the chamber of commerce," adds Robinson.

Because before you trust anyone with your vacation, you do have to do your homework.

Social media can be an aid in determining if a business is legit too. Ask them for additional photos of their place, or take things one step further and ask them to Facetime or Skype with you on sight of the place you would like to rent.
