A group of Ashwaubenon renters are scrambling to find a new place to live tonight. This news coming after their landlords issued a notice saying, they must be out by the end of the month.
Just off of William Charles Court in Ashwaubenon many renters have already moved out after receiving a 6-month notice back in July. But some stayed thinking they had an agreement or understanding with village leaders that they could stay until early spring. That turns out to not be the case and is putting some residents move into gear.
For John Fenner of Ashwaubenon, 816 and Williams Charles Court is home.
"I've lived in the same apartment for 26 years," says Fenner.
But his neighborhood is quickly shrinking.
"My building 816 is sold. The building over here has sold," adds Fenner pointing out all of the different apartments that have been sold recently.
This area is slated to be redeveloped into new housing with demolition starting in May or June. Everyone was given a six month heads up to evacuate but some were told a few months extension would likely be granted by the village board.
"Some people are shocked, that you know, they have less than a month to get out," says 10-year resident Louis Busch.
"He assured me that yes an extension could be granted and that there was really no hurry," adds Fenner.
Mike Aubinger the Ashwaubenon Village President says, his voice on the matter was trumped though.
"The board just voted no."
Even though he would have liked to give some tenants with particular circumstances a few more months to evacuate.
"I just felt we probably, especially this time of year, could have been a little bit more compassionate about how we handled it," adds Aubinger.
Now several people on this block in Ashwaubenon are racing against time.
"I don't want to see people homeless because of this," adds Busch.
In an attempt to come to terms with what some say they were told, versus what the village board voted on.
The village president says only two people from the apartment complex approached the board to let them know how the end of the month deadline would be very difficult for them to accomplish. Today NBC26 talked to four residents who said, if the eviction goes through, they'll likely be forced to go to a homeless shelter.
