The maze of one-way streets in downtown Appleton can be confusing for drivers, according to city leaders. Those streets are just one of the things they're looking to change after a mobility study that addressed traffic flow downtown.
The study looked at improvement for vehicle, bicycle and pedestrian travel downtown. One possible change would be adding more bike lanes, which would go over well with Fox Cities Cycling Association President Rob Gusky.
"I can tell you from experience it would take a more experienced cyclist to ride down College Avenue," Gusky said.
Another potential change would turn Appleton Street from a one-way to two-way road, which would help with north/south travel through downtown.
"We get a lot of feedback that it's confusing," said Appleton Director of Public Works Paula Vandehey. "It's kind of driving out of your way."
One reason the mobility study was necessary was because of plans to finally build an exhibition center downtown.
"We just want to make sure that the downtown area is prepared for all modes of transportation," said Vandehey.
Input from Thursday's public meeting will be used in the final plans, and city leaders will present those to the Common Council in June.
