Updated Story...
At about 12 o'clock this morning there was a drive by shooting in central Appleton. It happened off of the 200 block of East Harris Street and while only a home was hit, leaving no one injured, the news of a drive by occurring in Appleton has the neighborhood a bit on edge.
The neighborhood off of East Harris Street is a mix of home owners, renters, a school and a daycare.
"People who know each other and care about each other," says one resident just off of Harris Street who’s lived here for 20 plus years. She asked to remain unnamed out of safety concerns.
And it's partly because of this unique mix of a community that makes Monday's drive by shooting such a concern.
"I wasn't aware of it. I mean it just really tells you that these kinds of events are happening everywhere. You just wonder," adds the 20 plus year resident.
Police say an eyewitness saw a full sized vehicle make two passes down East Harris Street Monday morning. The second pass was the one this neighborhood is talking about today.
"The second time it came through what they noticed is that there was an individual standing up in the vehicle with their torso outside of the sunroof," says Sgt. Dave Lund.
That person was described as a black man with a thin build. He fired a single shot at a home and then the driver sped off.
"We're not really sure what the intent was of the individual who fired the shot or who they were with," adds Sgt. Lund.
Right now investigators believe that this was an isolated incident meaning whoever fired that round likely intended it to hit a specific home.
"It appears that maybe some type of message that somebody was trying to send. But why, that's up to our investigators to come to that conclusion," adds Sgt. Lund.
So for now investigators will continue knocking on doors in an attempt to find out more.
And this community will hope they get to the bottom of it so it doesn't happen again.
