Earlier today, Appleton Police Chief Todd Thomas addressed the recent shootings of four more police officers, one of whom died.
Detective Benjamin Marconi of the San Antonio Police Department was ambushed and assassinated during a traffic stop.
While writing a traffic ticket, another driver pulled up behind him, got out of his vehicle, walked to the passenger side window of Marconi's car and shot him in the head.
"It makes my heart heavy to read these accounts of officers being attacked and killed all because of what they do," Chief Thomas said.
Reports indicate that in 2015, over 50,000 police officers were assaulted nationwide.
Over 10,00 of them were assaulted by a firearm, knife or other dangerous weapon.
"While we wait for our national leaders to condemn the increase of 71% in the number of officers killed by gunfire this year, and a tamping down of any hateful rhetoric, we will continue to be resolute in doing our duties," Thomas states.
With Thanksgiving just a few days away, Thomas goes on to encourage everyone to take a moment to remind those you love and care about how thankful you are for them.
The Appleton Police Department will be handing out blue ribbons in their lobby for the public to wear to show their support for law enforcement.
"We are blessed to live in the Fox Cities and we truly appreciate the community support we have. We thank you for being great partners and allies of ours," Thomas said. "If we haven't won your trust yet please give us a chance. We think you will be glad you did."
