Today an Appleton Police Department officer who was shot in the line of duty this past May spoke publicly about the incident.

Officer Stephanie Wiener is still recovering from a gunshot wound and broken hip, but addressed a crowd today at Keller INC in Kaukauna.

The event focused on encouraging and supporting local police officers, and Officer Wiener was sharing her story for the first time.

She says in all the time since May 28th when she and good Samaritan Andrew Maltby were shot by a robbery suspect, she has held no bitter feelings toward the man who left her with "physical and emotional setbacks." Wiener says she still prays for his soul and wishes she could help him.

Wiener says too often police officers are the target of hatred and disrespect, when so many of them are humble men and women just trying to do their part to protect their communities.

Keller INC presented the 5 police agencies in attendance with checks for $2,500. Some agencies say they may plan on using the money toward their K-9 program.
