APPLETON, WI -- An Appleton man who police say played a role in an overdose death last year entered a "not guilty" plea in Outagamie County court today.
30-year-old Steven Mattfield is charged with 1st Degree Reckless Homicide in the overdose death of Jason Canaday.
In court, Mattfield was calm, and collected when speaking with the judge. But when speaking with his attorneys beforehand, Mattfield could be heard clearly voicing frustration with the charge.
Mattfield is accused of providing methadone to Canaday, who was found dead in October of last year at an Appleton residence.
Police say Canaday died after overdosing on the opioid.
The felony carries a maximum 40-year prison sentence, and up to $100,000 in fines.
Mattfield's next court date is October 14th.
