A 44-year-old Appleton man has been arrested for his 7th OWI after crashing a van into a tree.
According to the Appleton Police Department, the man was speeding on the 1900 block of E. Newberry Street around 9:30 Monday night, lost control on a curve, crossed the centerline and hit a tree on the other side of the road.
While first responders were working to free the driver who was trapped in the van, they told investigators the man smelled like alcohol. Police said he later admitted to drinking before the crash.
The driver suffered significant, but non-life threatening injuries. He was taken to the hospital for treatment. There were no passengers in his vehicle.
Police are referring a charge of 7th offense OWI to the Outagamie County District Attorney's Office. The driver was also cited for open intoxicants, operating left of center, operating without insurance and operating without a seatbelt.
