No one was hurt as the Appleton Fire Dept. responded to a fire that broke out at a sixteen unit apartment building in the 3000 Block of S. Chain Drive.

When crews arrived they say smoke was showing from a lower level patio door and confirmed that two people had already safely exited the apartment.

According to the fire department, one of the residents was cooking a meal and thought they’d turned off the stove burner. The control knob did not fully shut off, and a fire broke out in a pan on the stove top.

The fire was quickly put out by a neighbor with a fire extinguisher that was in the building.

The fire was confined to the kitchen area and damage estimates are approximately $3,000. Five adult residents and one infant are being assisted by The American Red Cross while they are temporarily displaced.

The smoke detectors in the apartment were not working at the time of the fire. The fire department would like to remind all residents to check their smoke detectors monthly.
