A 20-year-old Appleton man has been charged with burglary, resisting/obstructing, possession of marijuana and possession of non-narcotic drugs after he was found inside a commercial building early Tuesday morning in the 1700 block of West College Avenue, according to an Appleton Police Department media release.

Paul A. Rivera, 20 of Appleton, has been confined at the Outagamie County Jail.

At 2:47 a.m. Tuesday, Appleton Police Department officers responded to the commercial building to investigate an intrusion alarm. While approaching the building, an officer saw Rivera inside the closed business. Rivera was in the area of the cash register when first seen by officers, according to the release.

With assistance from the Grand Chute Police Department, officers secured the perimeter of the business. As Rivera exited the store, he was given commands to stop. Rivera immediately went back into the business.

Rivera was repeatedly told a K9 unit would be sent into the business if he did not surrender himself. Following the warnings, Appleton K9 Eon was deployed into the business. Upon entry by the K9, Rivera surrendered himself without further incident.
