Classes resume Monday morning for students at Antigo High School.
Late Saturday night, 18-year-old Jakob E. Wagner opened fire with a high-powered rifle outside of a high school prom. Two students were wounded before a police officer who was in the parking lot fatally shot him, authorities said Sunday.
Many in and around the Antigo community are still shocked that a deadly shooting could happen so close to home.
Neighbors describe the city as quiet and tight-knit.
Those we spoke with say they’re thankful the ordeal didn’t see more lives lost in the process.
“I don’t think there’s an answer you can give that is going to take away all the why questions, so we can simply comfort each other with the truth,” Shared Pastor Bill Volm of Peace Lutheran Church.
Investigators have not discussed a possible motive.
The Wisconsin Department of Justice’s Division of Criminal Investigation has taken over the shooting investigation, as it involves an officer.
Classes will resume Monday and counselors will be available on all school sites.
Police will also be increasing their presence.
