Tonight, those who know the Antigo shooting victim say he and his family are staying strong on his road to recovery.

While many in the community are praising the quick action of officers on scene for thwarting something that could have gone much worse, some are also expressing sympathy for the family of the suspect, killed by police.

As the investigation continues in Antigo, those who know the student shot in the leg by suspect Jakob Wagner say they're thankful he's alive, and recovering.

"People are very welcoming, because it is such a small community," says Megan Montgomery, who says she is a leader in a youth group the victim belongs to.

"He loves God, he loves people," says Montgomery, smiling, untroubled by the near-freezing rain that has once again started falling Monday evening. "He's a great athlete," she adds, holding her bike as the rain douses her jacket.

Montgomery says she has been trying to give his family privacy as they heal, but she says the conversation that has taken place so far is inspiring.

"And one of the first things I heard out of the mother's mouth is, 'God is good,'" says Montgomery, "and they are, as well, concerned about the victim's family."

They're sentiments also expressed in the official family statement, read by Antigo Police Chief Eric Roller:

"Please also pray for the family of Jakob Wagner. As much as we are struggling through this event, we cannot imagine the grief they are experiencing at this time."

Montgomery says she's humbled by the family's wishes.

"He technically hurt their son," she says, "but it's about forgiveness."

And while investigators are still combing through evidence in the case, Montgomery says she's hoping others find hope in the victim's recovery.

"It does offer hope to people who don't have any," says Montgomery, reiterating just how lucky the victim is to still be alive and out of the hospital after being shot by a high-powered rifle, "hope is something that you can hold on strong to."

Along with the high school, Montgomery says Antigo Community Church is also offering counseling services to anyone in the community who feels like they need help in getting through this healing process.
