GREEN BAY, WI--- A 9-year old boy is safe tonight staying in Green Bay. An amber alert was issued for Donovin Johnston yesterday after police say his mother Connie Smiley violated a court order by taking him while his guardian slept.
“I checked the amber alert every 20 seconds."
Jacob Lappen is the second cousin and guardian of Donovin Johnston who just received custody of the 9 year old.
He reported Donovin missing believing his mother Connie Smiley had taken him from his home in the middle of the night.
“Love him to death. Glad he's back."
We're also learning what goes into bringing children home safely. Police say there are specific criteria for an amber alert.
“The child's life has to be in danger and there has to be credible information about the child, about the suspect and some other variables like the suspect’s vehicle, potential location," says Capt. Kevin Warych with the Green Bay Police Department.
Police say they have a situation that meets the criteria for an amber alert they let the state know.
