Four people escaped a house fire in the village of Sherwood Wednesday.
The fire started early in the morning and destroyed one home and damaged another next door, according to Harrison Fire Rescue Chief Amos Mikkelson.
"This is a fire that started in the garage went into the attic and burned the roof off of a house," said Fire Chief Mikkelson. "So really that’s going to go really quickly. There's nothing to stop the fire up there."
Homeowner Larry Buck and his wife, along with his daughter and grandson, were all sleeping when the fire broke-out in the middle of the night.
Buck said his first instinct was to put out the fire using the fire extinguisher, but it was too late. The home was completely destroyed.
"About 1:30 this morning my wife heard some wind, thought it was a storm outside, got up walked into the kitchen opened the garage door, and there were flames," Buck said. “She shut the door and got everyone else up, and outside and called 9-11 and that was it.”
He said it was extremely frightening, but they escaped without injury.
The damage is estimated at over $300,000.
Fire Chief Mickelson said the town of Harrison is starting a donation drive. Those interested in contributing can contact Harrison Fire Rescue.
