A World War II veteran is going viral on social media after his grandson posted a photo of him kneeling in solidarity with NFL players protesting the anthem.

Brennan Gilmore posted the photo Sunday. It shows his grandfather, who he said is a Missouri farmer, kneeling while wearing his WWII veteran hat.

"My grandpa is a 97-year-old WWII vet and Missouri farmer who wanted to join with those who #TakeaKnee: 'Those kids have every right to protest," Gilmore wrote on Twitter.

As of Monday afternoon, the post has been retweeted 135,000 times and liked 356,000 times.

Gilmore says his grandfather has been an ally to the Civil Rights movement for many years.

Nearly every NFL team participated in some form of protest Sunday during the national anthem. The protests were in response to President Trump saying NFL players who protest the anthem should be fired and fans should boycott games during a rally Friday.

Some Packers players chose to sit on the bench during the anthem, while the rest of the team stood arm-in-arm.
