A young speller is $40,000 richer after winning the Scripps National Spelling Bee Thursday night.

Ananya Vinay, 12, of Fresno, California won the competition after spelling the word "marocain."

Marocain is a dress fabric made of silk or rayon and a filling of other yarns.

"As soon as I spelled my word I realized, but I was just standing there...I was so happy," Vinay said.

Vinay placed in the 100s last year, showing hard work paid off.
