MARINETTE (NBC26) - Vice President Mike Pence stayed in Washington as the president made remarks about lifting sanctions against Turkey, which meant cancelling his visit to Marinette Wednesday morning.

"When you get invited to see the Vice President of the United States, you can't say no," said Dan Harrington of Iron Mountain. He and his wife Cindy drove an hour and a half to see him.

"Of course we were excited to see him, but I'm sure he'll reschedule and we'll probably come back,” Cindy said.

While there was a lot of planning that went into the Vice President's visit, the Menominee County Sheriff says their security was nothing new as they’re used to this kind of work. He adds that Wednesday’s event was a good rehearsal for the next time he comes.

At least 150 local, state and federal officers were on hand Wednesday morning to make sure things went smoothly. Mark Yankovich, the owner of M&M Aviation who works with the airport, was also doing the same.

"We had the secret service here since last week getting everything ready; having the barricades set up, trailer for the news media, and where we were going to park the aircraft,” Mark said.

After arriving, Pence would have been on his way to take a tour of the shipyard of Fincantieri Marinette Marine. In a statement from their press office, they said, “We learned this morning that the Vice President was not going to be able to make it to Wisconsin today. While it is unfortunate, we understand. Our country’s leaders often have to juggle many priorities, and changes to schedules happen. We look forward to hosting the Vice President at some point in the future. In the meantime, we are back to work giving the Navy a means through which to keep America and her interests safe.”

The Vice President was able to make his afternoon stop in Pleasant Prairie.
