SAVASTOPOL, WIS — In preparation for Memorial Day dozens of volunteers in Sevastopol came out in force Friday morning to honor our fallen brothers and sisters who served in the armed forces.

At Bayside Cemetery in the Town of Sevastopol, hundreds of veterans have been laid to rest over the years. On Friday, thoughtful volunteers from a local FFA chapter and the VFW honored those veterans for their service and sacrifice.

The volunteers did so by putting an American flag next to every last veteran at Bayside Cemetery who lost their life in service or after they returned home. In total it's estimated these volunteers put over 14-hundred flags in the ground during the course of the morning just to show their community, they honor and remember the men and women who served.

"One of the standards that people live by in Door County is service, service to your country, service to your community and when I see those flags it just makes me feel so great that people are so willing to participate," says Joe Knaapen the Commander of the 3088 VFW Sturgeon Bay.

"That's what it's all about, just to understand that those people served our country and for our kids to feel honored to find and make sure that none of them get left behind. That's pretty special in my opinion," says Dale Carlson the FFA Advisor for the Sevastopol School District.
