When picking up a box of donuts for the family, you want to make sure everyone gets something they love. But, wouldn’t it be fun for the whole gang if you could bring home donuts that each person can turn into a personal masterpiece?

Dunkin’ is testing out a new idea that lets you and your kids do just that: the DIY donut kit. Don’t worry about making the donuts, though. The experts at Dunkin’ still take care of the hard part. All customers have to do is choose how many donuts they want in their special DIY pack. Then, tucked inside the familiar pink-and-white Dunkin’ box, you’ll find a variety of frostings and sprinkles to customize each donut.

The idea came from Norma Valkenaar, a Dunkin’ employee in Concord, California. She asked her store’s owner, Matt Cobo, if she could bring some donuts and all the fixings to her nephews. Valkenaar thought the treat would brighten their mood and ease some of the boredom of their quarantine due to the coronavirus.

“The reality of this experience has set in, and we know it’s not going anywhere anytime soon,” Cobo said in a press release. “Like most parents, we were looking for ways to entertain our kids and bring a little levity to this situation.”

Once Cobo got word about how happy the kids were with these DIY donut kits, he had his stores start putting together more of them to help spread some love and cheer around. Cobo got his sister and other store employees to help with a “donut dash surprise.” They would leave the kits on the doorstep of friends and family and then text them, “You’ve been Dunk’d!”

Now, Dunkin’ locations around the U.S. are picking up on this fun idea and starting to offer the DIY donut kits as part of their menu. Participating Dunkin’ restaurants will have them available at their drive-thru and for curbside pickup, as well as delivery for locations that offer that service.

These delicious DIY kits could be the perfect way to make someone’s day a little sweeter.

“This is our small way of trying to brighten someone’s day,” Cobo said. “The simple joy of getting to create your own donut can make kids light up, and if we can be a part of creating that moment, that makes us happy.”
