DOOR COUNTY (NBC 26) — The west side of Sturgeon Bay could soon have a new grocery store. City officials say the grocery chain ALDI is interested in opening a location in the area.

On Monday night, Sturgeon Bay Alderman Spencer Gustafson announced on Facebook that ALDI is considering a store on the city’s west side.

Gustafson says the potential location would be near the intersection of Highway 42/57 and South Ashland Avenue.

He says he's been working with the city for years to bring a grocery store to the west side, a project he says has been a long-term priority for the neighborhood.

“I’ve actually been working with them personally for the last five years as a council member, and I even talked to the mayor before that, trying to get a grocery option for the west side," Gustafson said. “To make everyday needs more accessible was a great move on our part to keep working toward that, and bringing a grocery store was at the top of the list."

Neighbors like Gail Elsholz are excited about the potential store.

“ALDI’s would be perfect because it’s not as extensive as, say, a Festival, although maybe it is… it’s just a perfect place," Gail Elsholz said.

Dr. Dan Farah, who owns Bay Port Chiropractic, says a development group recently made an offer on his property for the ALDI project.

“We received an offer fairly quickly from the development group that’s turning it into this ALDI proposition," Dr. Dan Farah said.

Farah says he’s looking forward to seeing a new grocery option in Sturgeon Bay.

“This area, as it’s growing, definitely needed something," Dr. Farah said.

NBC 26 contacted ALDI for comment. A company spokesperson has not yet confirmed whether the grocery chain will open a location in Sturgeon Bay.
