The Brown County Parks Department is hosting its annual bat house workshop event this upcoming Saturday at 10 am at their Barkhausen location in Suamico. It is a fun family activity that everyone can enjoy.
Bats are really important to the ecosystem for a number of reason. A big thing that draws bats around here are the number of mosquitoes and they do eat a lot of mosquitoes , quite a bit. Also another thing is that people want to get them out of their houses usually bats like being in attics and bars, stuff like that, says Jason Petrella, Brown County Parks Department.
Building a bat box is a way to help encourage our little furry friends to move out of our homes and also to encourage them to be in the area to cut down on those pesky mosquitoes.
Bring a hammer, everything else is supplied, we will provide the nails. All the kits are pre-cut pre-drilled, we will go through on how to put them together, says Jason.
And while the opening to these bat boxes may be small, they are a perfect size so that it prevents any other insects or animals from using them. Really bats like more of a three quarters to an inch gap and that's about all they need to get in there and roost, and then there is a mesh in there where it allows them to grab on since what we use now is plywood, says Jason.
So by the time your bat house is assembled and painted, it should look something like this. So if you or your family would like to try this out, just give the brown county parks department a call and you can see them this Saturday or next Saturday at 10 am.
