Flags are at half-staff across Northeast Wisconsin as a way to honor and remember the lives lost in Las Vegas. For many, it was difficult to look at those without asking the question: "why?"

NBC26 spoke with neighbors across our area who said when they heard nearly 60 people had died and more than 500 were hurt by a gunman in Las Vegas, they didn't know what to think.

The most common reaction? If it happened there, it could happen anywhere.

"Hearing the noise of the bullets when he was shooting the shots off, that was horrific to me," said Amanda Millan of Sobieski. "I was thinking to myself what would I have done in that situation? Would I have known what to do?"

While many admit public places aren't as safe as they were, just five or ten years ago, many said it's also important to not let instances like this change the way Americans live their lives.

Law enforcement said the gunman, identified as Stephen Paddock, 64, of Mesquite, Nevada, opened fire Sunday night at a country music festival on the Las Vegas strip. 59 people are confirmed dead, the Clark County Sheriff's Department said.

Investigators are still trying to figure out what motivated Paddock in the shooting, which is now considered the deadliest in modern U.S. history.
