ASHWAUBENON — On social media nowadays, people are using their birthdays to raise money for a charitable cause, but Melissa Albers is taking it a step further. She is using her birthday month of May to raise money for students at her school who are finding it hard to pay for lunch.

"Students need to eat," Albers said. "We have some students here who are struggling."

This is the second year Albers is doing this type of fundraiser. She has been working in the lunchroom at Parkview Middle School for 3 years and says she can't stand to see students go hungry.

"Middle school is tough, and the last thing they should be worrying about is food," Albers said.

In her first year, she says she raised around $4000 to pay for student lunch debt. This year, she has already made $1500 in 5 days.

"I never thought It would be this successful," Albers said. "I want to help as many kids as I can."
