Shepherd of the Lakes Church started Project Backpack back in 2010 to fight weekend hunger in children in Waupaca County.
A team of two-hundred volunteers, stuff reusable backpacks with enough food for three meals and a snack for both Saturday and Sunday.
School counselors help distribute the backpacks at school on Fridays and every recipient remains anonymous. Last year they served 250 children every week.
"We like to come along and help the kids, so they can learn better and not be hungry during the weekend,” says Shepherd of the Lakes Church Senior Pastor Dean Wheeler.
Project backpack serves five school districts and fourteen different school programs. NBC26 is looking forward to supporting the cause over the next few months through our Three Degree Guarantee.
