Notre Dame made history of its own Saturday night at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee, winning the program's first girls soccer state title with a 1-0 victory against Catholic Memorial in the Division 3 championship.
Earlier in the day, fellow Fox River Classic Conference squad Bay Port took home the Division 1 gold ball, so Notre Dame is the second local school to win a girls soccer state crown.
Junior midfielder Jenna Cuene's goal was all the Tritons needed to secure the win. Trudy Quidzinski assisted the goal off a free kick.
"It means a lot. We've been trying for 13 years and been so close. For eight years, we've been here and we've come up short," said head coach Bob Rickards as the team cheered with the trophy. "To now hear that right there and know that we've done it and we've climbed that hill and we're the best in Division 3, it feels really good."
After appearing in three of the last four state tournaments, Notre Dame -- and its seniors especially -- had sights set on the D3 gold ball all season long.
"Obviously it means a lot for us. We've been waiting for this moment," said Cuene. "It's been really cool to be the first team to be able to achieve this. And obviously it's very amazing to be the second team in the area to accomplish this."
