The city of Fond du Lac's water billing system is currently down for maintenance. They are recommending residents to monitor their credit card statements.
According the city's website, they believe a third party payment engine may have had a leakage of credit card data.
Below is a statement from the city:
On December 12th, the City was notified by a local partner bank that they had a number of compromised credit cards with the Water Payment Portal as the common purchase point. The City started an investigation. Our vendor third-party payment engine stated that there was a known vulnerability. The City had patched this vulnerability back in October, on the same day we were notified by the vendor. There is a possibility that City water customers that made payments on the water payment portal during the months of August 2017 thru October 2017 could have had their credit card numbers compromised. The investigation information found so far is that the only data that has been skimmed is the credit card data. No other personal identifiable information appears to have been skimmed.
The City took down the Water Payment at 9am on December 13th. Customers who paid their water bills online during this period stated above should closely monitor their credit and debit card accounts.
The City recommends that you review your statements for any unauthorized purchases that could have been made. We have found that most of the tests of credit card numbers have been utilizing small amounts at places like iTunes, Dunkin Donuts and other mobile/online payment portals. If you recognize any transactions that you didn’t make, report this to your financial institution as soon as possible and request a new account number or card be issued. We also recommend that you look closely as past statements as this single “test” transaction could have taken place a number of months ago.
This was a vulnerability in a third party vendor. None of your credit card data is stored by the City of Fond du Lac.
The city will accept payments using the standalone credit card machine and will waive the $3.00 credit card fee. If you need to pay a water bill, you're asked to mail in your payment, drop it in one of the city's drop boxes or come pay at the city office.
