MILWAUKEE, Wis. — Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a few days away, a day that will celebrate racial integration and equal rights. Wisconsin, however, is the worst state for integration of other races. Only the District of Columbia is worse.
According to a WalletHub study, Wisconsin is ranked 50th when it comes to gaps between races.
Wisconsin's "employment and education" and regular "education" ranks are 50th out of 51. The state's "social and civic engagement" rank is 51st. To make matters worse, Wisconsin has a top-five highest annual income gap and a top-five highest unemployment rate gap.
In just about every category, Wisconsin ranks last for racial integration. This affects the standardized test score gaps, which then affects the percentage of adults with high school and college diplomas. Wisconsin is top five in highest gap percentage of adults with at least a high school diploma.
New Mexico was the No. 1 state in racial integration, with a total score of 78.81. A 55- point difference separates Wisconsin and New Mexico.
