WISCONSIN -- The DMV has been directed to close for one day and take precautionary measures to help slow the spread of coronavirus.

According to Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT), all DMV Customer Service Centers will be closed March 20. During that time there will be a deep cleaning of the buildings.

“Unfortunately, COVID-19 (coronavirus) is having a dramatic impact on our communities. We want to help flatten the infection curve over the next few weeks to protect the most vulnerable among us. Limiting the need to visit a DMV while serving Wisconsin citizens is one of our efforts,” WisDOT Secretary-designee Craig Thompson said. “All DMV services related to vehicles can be done online. We encourage our customers to visit wisconsindmv.gov for this information and avoid an unnecessary trip to a service center.”

Secretary Thompson asks people to minimize in-person transactions by going to DMV online services. Because of this, temporary changes will be made to protect the public and DMV staff.

Driver licenses and CDLs that expire during this public health emergency will automatically be extended by 60 day and late fees will be waived.

The DMV is also canceling all driver skills tests as of March 18 until further notice.

People will also be notified that Administrative Suspension hearings will be offered by telephone or paper instead of in person.

When the DMV reopens March 23, they will restrict certain in-person services to appointment only. These services include new driver licenses and issuing identification cards.
