SHAWANO COUNTY (NBC 26) -- A wrong way driver was arrested on his fifth OWI after Shawano County deputies deflated the vehicle's tires early Friday morning.
According to the Shawano County Sheriff's Office, they received reports of a vehicle traveling in the wrong lane on Highway 29.
Deputies tried to get the driver's attention with a siren, emergency lights and a spotlight, but the driver did not pull over or stop.
The Sheriff's Office says one deputy got ahead of the vehicle and deployed spike strips, which deflated the front tires. The vehicle continued for some distance with tires smoking before eventually coming to a stop.
When the driver was approached, deputies say he acted like he had no clue he was in the wrong lane or that officers were around him. The driver had gone for 14 miles in the wrong lane.
According to the Sheriff's Office, the driver failed the field sobriety tests and was arrested on his fifth OWI. He is also being charged with reckless driving and operating on the wrong way of a divided highway.
