BROWN COUNTY, Wis — It might not officially be winter yet, but it certainly feels like it. That’s why Wisconsin’s Department of Transportation is reminding folks tonight to prepare your emergency winter car kits now, just in case you need them.

The DOT says you’ll want to pack your trunk with items like jumper cables, a small shovel, a flashlight with backup batteries, a first aid kit, an extra pair of boots and blankets on the off chance that you find yourself in the ditch this winter.

“You never know when you’re going to be stranded so we like to emphasize that you should be prepared, it may be a while before somebody actually has the ability to come get you,“ says Missy Kok Regional Communications Manager for Wisconsin’s DOT.

The DOT adds that a phone charger in that kit can really be a life saver too. Because if you do end up in the ditch or on a desolate road during a snow storm a way to communicate to someone is where you’re stuck, is crucial to getting help.
