NBC 26 calculated rates of infection for the nation’s ten largest counties by comparing states’ official county-level coronavirus figures to U.S. Census Bureau population data.
The rate of infection in Los Angeles County, Calif., is 2 cases per 1,000 residents.
In Harris and Dallas counties in Texas, the rate is 1 per 1,000 residents.
San Diego and Riverside counties in California also have a rate of approximately 1 case per 1,000 residents.
Testing center opens at Resch Center
The three of the nation’s ten most-populous counties that have rates of infection higher than Brown County are:
- Cook County, Ill. (7 per 1,000)
- Miami-Dade, Fla. (4 per 1,000)
- Kings County, N.Y. (10 per 1,000)
As of Thursday, Brown County has 1,057 confirmed cases, according to DHS.
The county’s population is approximately 265,000, according to a 2019 U.S. Census Bureau estimate.
As of Thursday, there were nearly 146,000 tests completed in Los Angeles County, equivalent to 14 tests per 1,000 people. (Los Angeles County's population estimate was more than 10 million in 2019, according to the Census Bureau.)
Brown County's more than 4,000 tests is equivalent to a rate of 15 tests per 1,000 people.
