The coronavirus isn't scaring away nursing students at UW-Green Bay. The university has already been working on a contingency plan in case the virus heads our way.
"Alternative planning happens even when there isn’t a COVID-19 virus at hand,” Gallagher-Lepak said.
There just might be a few changes in how nursing students are taught, like teaching more classes online or utilizing more simulations.
"One of the most popular ways to think about alternatives is clinical simulation,” she said. “All nursing programs have clinical skills and clinical simulation labs. So working with mannequins and there is permissible amount of time."
The college says all of their nursing students have still been able to go to their clinical, but some agencies have been a little hesitant about taking students this summer due to impending effects of the virus.
"We've seen some beginning questioning by agencies thinking about, they may have to prioritize medical equipment: gloves, gowns, masks; and thus may at some point down the road have to limit student activity."
However, Gallagher-Lepak said most agencies are embracing the opportunity since they wrote nursing students into their pandemic plans...several years ago.
