New Community Shelter in need of money

GREEN BAY — In years past, the New Community Shelter would have around 70 people a night staying at the shelter. This year, the shelter says they have an average of 90 people a night staying at the shelter.

"We used to have peaks and valleys," said Executive Director Teri Refsguard. "The population would go up and down, but we haven't seen that so much."

With more people staying at the shelter, the Refsguard says the need more staff to help those in need. However, the shelter doesn't have enough money to hire people.

"Our staffing needs to provide services to people," Refsguard said. "We have people with degrees and we need to pay them competitively."

Anyone who stays at the shelter is open to receiving counseling on addiction, mental health and other areas. However, with more people coming to the shelter, they need more staff, but they don't have the money to hire any people.

"We are looking to raise $100,000 from our annual appeal," Refsguard said. "That money is going towards our general fund. We need money to pay for more staff members."
