GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- The New Community Shelter has implemented its emergency prepared plan regarding emergency shelter and community meal programs effective as of Sunday afternoon.

The shelter will focus on health and safety of their residents. They also say they will not be accepting food or item donations as well as volunteers at this time.

“It is a delicate balancing act. On one hand we are here to help people experiencing homelessness and individuals and families who would otherwise go hungry. Yet at the same time, we need to do our best to protect people from being exposed,” Executive Director Terri Refsguard says. “We are already feeling the effects financially, but we really have to do what is best for our community’s most vulnerable residents with little to no resources.”

According to Terri, they will continue the New Community Meal Program and open their doors to the public. People can get meals to-go during the week and twice a day on weekends.

In addition, they are moving their event 'Murder Mystery Dinner - Hula's & Homicide' from April 17 to May 29.

The shelter is encouraging people to make financial donations to help keep up funding at this time.

“The decisions we make now are not easy,” Refsguard said. “I know people will still want to donate items (clothes and other items) and many of our volunteer groups said they are still willing to come in and prepare and serve meals. However, we have to contain our facility which is in the best interest of everyone associated with the New Community Shelter.”
