Losing a paycheck as businesses temporarily close

Posted at 7:37 PM, Mar 17, 2020

GREEN BAY (NBC 26) - As gyms and small town boutiques close, and restaurants can't have people dine in, it's also closing the doors on income for many people who rely on that paycheck.

Jim Golembeski helps people find jobs every day and he says there's hope for the recently unemployed.

"We have a lot of jobs yet,” Golembeski said, the Executive Director of theBay Area Workforce Development Board. “The underlying economy in northeast Wisconsin is extremely healthy. It’s just a matter we have to work through the craziness with this virus."

He said there are plenty of opportunities available; but adds his colleagues are starting to see an influx of people searching for jobs.

“The best place right now [to search] is Job Center of Wisconsin, there's just a lot of information about available jobs there. Indeed is huge right now. Google search is not so bad. The thing about that is they’re not as local and you don’t want to get too wide of a net.”

So if you're branching out, locals say its best to be patient.

"Like everyone says staying calm is our best bet right now, and through it all a lot of gratitude and simplicity of life is going to come out of this and appreciating each other with social distancing,” Katie F. said.

The workforce development center says if you have lost your job the first thing you should do is file for unemployment. If you have questions, there is a helpline. That number is (888) 258-9966.
