How to stay safe in frigid temperatures

GREEN BAY, Wis. — With these frigid temperatures, Dr. Matt Nelson, Emergency Medicine Physician at HSHS St. Vincent Hospital, tells us his main concerns in the winter are hypothermia, frostbite and dehydration.

He says it mostly affects the elderly and the young.

The Green Bay Area Public School District tells us if the wind chill factor generates a wind chill warning, a sustained wind chill of -35, they will close or consider a delayed start.

However, if there is a wind chill advisory they will typically still hold school.

Some tips Dr. Nelson gives for how to stay safe in the cold are:

- Dress warm by adequately layering up.

- Use hand and feet warmers to avoid frostbite.

- Stay hydrated.
