GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- Green Bay Metro Fire Department said it finished its Holiday Wreath Campaign with 14 red bulbs. This falls within the average number of fires the department sees per year during the holiday season.
This wreath campaign ran between Thanksgiving and New Year's Day. Starting with all green lights on the wreath, for every residential fire, a bulb was changed to red. This campaign is done every year to bring awareness to fire safety, especially during the holiday season.
The Department has said firefighters see on average between 13 to 17 fires during the holiday season. For this year's campaign, the department says there was a total of 14 residential fires.
Breaking it down, firefighters report there was a total of six cooking fires, three electrical, one from an unattended candle, and four that are still under investigation.
As we begin the new year, the Department reminds people to check smoke and CO detectors as well as practice fire safety to keep yourself, family, and friends safe all year.
