MADISON (TMJ4) -- A cheese champion has been named in Madison.

The World Championship Cheese Contest took place in Madison March 3 and 4.

The contest was held at the Monona Terrace Convention Center in Madison and featured over 3,000 cheese, butter and other dairy options.

A gruyere from Bern, Switzerland was named as the 2020 World Champion Cheese. The cheese, called Gourmino Le Gruyere AOP, is made by Michael Spycher of Mountain Dariy Fritzenhaus for Gourmino AG. Spycher also won the 2008 World Champion Cheese Contest with his Gruyere.

“For generations, cheesemakers have honed their craft with a commitment to excellence, and that shows in the work of World Championship Cheese Contest winners,” said John Umhoefer, Executive Director for the Wisconsin Cheese Makers Association.

There were 26 nations represented in the contest, with the United States earning gold medals in 90 of the 132 contests.
