GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- Green Bay Police announced Thursday that a suspect in a homicide from last month has been charged.
Police said the Brown County District Attorney charged Marcus G. Stokes with first degree intentional homicide, possession of a firearm by a felon, and misdemeanor bail jumping in the death of Calvin James Barber Jr. Police said he is currently being held at the Brown County Jail, awaiting arraignment.
The murder was reported March 24 at about 10:55 a.m., when police said officers from the Green Bay Police Department responded to a 911 call regarding an apparently deceased man at a residence in the 2200 block of Imperial Lane. Upon arrival, officers located a 39-year-old man, Calvin James Barber Jr, deceased.
Police said it was determined that Barber had succumbed to injuries sustained by a single gunshot wound, which was later confirmed by the Dane County Medical Examiner’s Office.
During the investigation, Marcus G. Stokes was identified as a person of interest. Police said detectives had information that the Stokes had fled to the Milwaukee area. Detectives from the Green Bay Police Department, along with the Milwaukee Police Department and Wisconsin Department of Criminal Investigation were able to apprehend Stokes in Milwaukee. He was taken into custody and remained incarcerated on unrelated warrants while this investigation continued.
Police said officers and detectives from the Green Bay Police Department recovered a firearm from a yard near the location of the incident. After further forensic examination by the Wisconsin State Crime Lab, police said the found firearm was positively determined to be the weapon used in the homicide.
