GREEN BAY (NBC 26) -- The Cellcom Green Bay Marathon will not happened as planned. The race was set for mid-May.
"Safety has always been a top priority for the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon," the organizers write in a letter to participants. "To maintain this commitment, the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon is converting its 2020 race weekend to a virtual event."
According to organizers, this means people can complete the race safely on their own and on any day they choose. They believe this was the only responsible way to hold the event.
While they encourage people to have fun while they train and run or walk, they also ask people adhere to emergency orders and social distancing recommendations advised by state and federal officials.
Organizers say those who have registered can still get their race packet mailed to them, including the bib, shirt, and medal. Alternatively, the registration can be honored for next year.

"Putting on the Cellcom Green Bay Marathon is an effort of thousands, and we thank each and every person who has been part of the marathon family as a runner, walker, volunteer, partner, sponsor, vendor and fan," the letter continues. "Our thoughts are with our medical partner, Prevea, and our public safety partners as they work hard to keep our communities healthy and safe. We can’t wait to see you again, as we look toward 2021."
