Some counties in Northeast Wisconsin are closing campgrounds to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

The health departments in both Oconto and Fond du Lac counties issued notices Tuesday that campgrounds in those counties will be closed.

Fond du Lac County Public Health Officer Kim Mueller stated that campgrounds allow for public gatherings in violation of Governor Evers' "safer at home" order. Mueller said campgrounds also encourage non-essential travel and draws in more people from outside of Fond du Lac County.

Fond du Lac County's campgrounds will remain closed as long as the Governor's "safer at home" order is in effect.

In Oconto County, the health department is ordering the closure of county campgrounds and boat landings, as well as the suspension of ATV use on county roads. As in Fond du Lac County, Debra Konitzer, Oconto County Health Officer, stated that limiting travel is one of the best ways to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Oconto County's campgrounds and boat landings will remain closed until further notice.
