APPLETON (NBC 26) -- Appleton's Sergeant Lori Duven was awarded the Wisconsin Association of Women Police (WAWP) Merit Award.

The Merit Award is given to an officer that has "distinguished themselves by superior accomplishments or continuing long term involvement in (or leadership of) projects, which make a significant contribution to public safety and/or law enforcement."

According to the Appleton Police Department (APD), Sgt. Duven is a member of the patrol division and specializes in domestic abuse investigations.

In addition to her patrol duties, she is the APD's liaison with Harbor House. She is also a contributing member of the Outagamie County Domestic Violence Intervention Team, serving also on their board. Sgt. Duven has been asked to provide training for domestic violence investigations both internally at APD and for outside agencies in the area.

Department staff say Sgt. Duven uses her thorough knowledge of state statues and her strong investigative skills to look further into reports completed by other patrol officers who respond to domestic violence calls. They say it is because of her passion and strong effort she puts forth to advocate for those who have been a victim of domestic abuse that she was nominated for this award.

Sgt. Duven was set to receive the Merit Award at the 2020 WAWP Conference in March. Unfortunately, the Department says this year’s conference was canceled due to the coronavirus crisis.
