APPLETON, Wis — APPLETON (NBC 26) -- An unexpected opportunity to spread some holiday cheer happened in the Fox Valley today. That’s where hundreds of volunteers showed up to the Fox Valley Humane Association to hang out with some pets looking for a forever home.

At the Fox Valley Humane Association in Appleton over 300 volunteers showed up before 10:30 on Christmas morning, to give some pets some extra attention on the holiday.

Staff says that the volunteers are doing everything from creating dog treats, to reading books to kittens and even taking the pets for a walk. It’s an act of kindness on the holiday that isn’t overlooked by staff or their generous volunteers.

“People are looking for a way to give back for the holiday and this is something that resonates with families, kids and adults,” says Pattie Jorgensen a Board Member of the Fox Valley Humane Association.

“They just need some love too. Hanging out with people today as everybody else is with their family,” says Maria Alferi of Neenah who showed up with her son to walk and play with a shelter dog.

Today’s event was so successful that staff is already on board with opening up their doors next Christmas as well. Staff says that before noon they had hundreds of visitors sign up for future volunteer opportunities down the road.
