It's that time of year when Wisconsinites are thinking about heading out on the ice for fishing or other recreation.

However, law enforcement is reminding residents that the ice is not safe to walk or drive on just yet.

On Tuesday, a car went into the water on Lake Butte des Morts in Winnebago County.

"Early ice is unsafe and unforgiving," deputies wrote on the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office Facebook page.

Before heading out on the ice, check with the local bait shop or lakeside resort for ice conditions, according to law enforcement.

Also, check the ice thickness with an ice chisel, auger or even spud bar.

"The biggest thing, if you're going to go out, make sure you have a buddy with you," said Lt. Tom Zeigle with the Brown County Sheriff's Office. "If not, make sure you know where you're going, and to have those simple ice safety ice safety instruments with you, ice safety picks, absolutely invaluable."

Here are some additional safety tips before heading out on the ice, via the Winnebago County Sheriff's Office:

  • Wait to walk on the ice until there is at least four inches of clear, solid ice. Snowmobiles and ATVs need at least five inches and trucks need at least 8-12 inches.
  • Wear a life jacket.
  • Avoid driving on ice whenever possible.
  • Be prepared to jump out if you need to use a car.
  • Don't drive across ice at night or when it's snowing.
  • Check at the access point for signs that an aeration system is in operation on the lake.
  • Avoid alcoholic beverages.
